Parade Magazine released its yearly All-American list and Michigan had two players make the cut — Bay City Western standout and reigning Mr. Basketball Matt Costello, who will play at Michigan State next season, and Cadillac big man John Simons, a Central Michigan commit.
Costello, a known commodity for years, is no surprise to make the team. For Simons, it’s another great accomplishment in a season full of them. Simons was also a Mr. Basketball candidate (he finished third). I thought it was interesting that Simons deflected some of that individual Mr. Basketball attention onto basketball in northern Michigan as a whole this season:
“There’s a lot of good players in northern Michigan this year,” Simons said. “There’s Sean Sheldon from Traverse City St. Francis and Chris Hass from Pellston.
“That made it kind of surprised that I was picked (as a Mr. Basketball finalist).”
Simons averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds per game for Cadillac this season.
